Ten minutes east, and a very different mix of homes
Warragul is the largest town in the Baw Baw Shire and the commercial heart of West Gippsland. From our base in Drouin, it is a short drive east along the Princes Freeway, and we spend a large share of our working weeks there. Warragul’s size means its housing is more varied than almost anywhere else in the region: grand Victorian and Edwardian homes on the hills near the town centre, interwar bungalows, solid post-war brick homes, units and townhouses close to the shops and station, and large estates spreading south and west.
We renovate bathrooms, ensuites and laundries across Warragul 3820. The approach is the same as everywhere we work: a design consultation in your home, a written scope, licensed and insured trades, and waterproofing installed to AS 3740 with full cure times and photographs of the membrane.
Period homes on the hills
Some of Warragul’s most beautiful homes are the Victorian and Edwardian houses on the rises around the town centre. Many have high ceilings, decorative cornices, timber floors and generous rooms. Their bathrooms, however, were often added or remodelled long after the house was built, sometimes in a former back verandah or a converted bedroom. These rooms can have uneven floors, walls that are far from straight and plumbing that has been altered several times.
Renovating a bathroom in a period home is a balancing act. Owners usually want modern comfort, with a generous shower, good heating and proper ventilation, while respecting the character of the house. We often draw on details from the rest of the home, such as skirting profiles, door hardware, window styles and colours, so the new bathroom feels as though it belongs. Classic tiles like subway, hexagon and encaustic-look patterns suit these homes well, as do cross-handle tapware and framed mirrors. High ceilings allow for tall tiling and statement lighting.
Structurally, these homes need careful preparation. Timber floors must be stiffened and levelled before tiling, and walls straightened before sheeting. We check for asbestos-containing materials in any later additions before demolition.
Interwar and post-war homes
Between the wars and in the decades after, Warragul grew steadily, and many streets are lined with bungalows and solid brick homes from this period. Bathrooms in these homes tend to be compact, often with a bath, a basin and sometimes a separate toilet. Original waterproofing is usually minimal or absent. Popular renovations include converting the bath to a walk-in shower, combining the toilet with the bathroom, and adding storage through recessed cabinets and niches.
Units and townhouses near the centre
Warragul has a growing number of units and townhouses close to the shops, the hospital and the station. Bathrooms in these homes are often small, and renovations may need owners corporation approval. We can supply documentation to support applications and plan work to minimise disruption to neighbours who share walls and driveways.
Newer estates
Large estates to the south and west of Warragul have added many family homes in recent years. As with newer homes elsewhere, the structure is generally sound but finishes are basic. Ensuite upgrades, larger showers, better vanities, heated towel rails and improved lighting are common requests. Some newer homes also show early signs of waterproofing issues, such as cracked grout or drummy tiles in the shower, which are best addressed early.
Rural homes around Warragul
Beyond the town boundary, homes on acreage around Warragul may rely on tank water and septic systems. We plan fixtures to suit water pressure and septic systems and design laundries and back entries to cope with working life on the land.

Accessibility close to services
Warragul’s hospital, medical practices and services make it a popular place for older residents to stay in their homes as they age. An accessible bathroom with a level-entry shower, grab rails, a comfortable toilet height and slip-resistant floors can make that possible. We work with families and, where involved, occupational therapists to plan bathrooms that are safe and still beautiful.
Water and services
Most of Warragul is connected to reticulated water and sewer, and town pressure suits most modern fixtures. Older homes may have galvanised pipes or old copper that is due for replacement, which we address during rough-in. Hot water systems in older homes may need review if a new shower or bath will demand more hot water.

Heating and comfort through Warragul winters
Warragul sits a little higher and often feels a degree or two cooler than towns to the west, and winter mornings can be properly cold. A bathroom renovation is the ideal moment to improve comfort. While the walls and ceiling are open, insulation can be added. Heated towel rails and in-floor heating can be wired in. Exhaust fans with run-on timers, ducted outside, keep mould at bay. In period homes with high ceilings, a well-positioned heater makes a noticeable difference to how warm the room feels.
Parking, access and older streets
Some of Warragul’s older streets are narrow and steep, with limited parking and long driveways. We plan deliveries, skip bins and trade parking in advance so work runs smoothly and neighbours are not inconvenienced. In units and townhouses with shared driveways, we coordinate access with the owners corporation where needed.

What we often find behind the tiles in Warragul
Opening up older Warragul bathrooms has taught us to expect the unexpected. In period homes, we sometimes find several generations of bathroom stacked on top of each other: a mortar bed from the original room, a layer of later tiles and then a sheet of fibre cement nailed over the top. Floors in these rooms may have been patched many times, and joists beneath the old shower are often darkened or softened by decades of slow leaks. In post-war homes, we regularly find shower recesses built on a mortar bed with no membrane at all, relying on the tiles to keep water out. In homes from the 1980s and 1990s, membranes are usually present but often stop short of the junctions or were never fitted with a puddle flange at the waste.
None of this is cause for alarm, but it is a reason to plan for contingencies. Our written scope notes the likely risks for your home and explains how any hidden damage will be handled. When the room is stripped, we show you what we find, explain the options and agree any changes before continuing. That way, nothing is hidden and the finished room is built on a sound base.
Family bathrooms in growing households
Many Warragul families are juggling school runs, work in town and sport on weekends. In these homes, the main bathroom works hard. A double vanity eases the morning queue. A bath with a shower over, or a separate shower and bath where space allows, suits young children. Plenty of hooks and towel rails, robust grout and tiles that hide marks keep the room looking good. Our guide to family bathroom design covers these ideas in more detail.
